WEAR RUNNING SHOES IN CASE OF ROAD WORK/TRACK WORK
Unfortunately in today's world of terrorism, road rage, and dangerous streets we should all have some type of self defense training.
What better way to do it than in a high energy kickboxing/m.m.a. class!
What is it? Why train in Mixed Martial Arts (m.m.a.)? What should you know/ask?
Mixed Martial Arts is a supremely adaptable way of training in the Martial Arts. One should seek out an instructor with a long and diversified training history, hence the term "mixed." Be wary of sudden M.M.A. claims! Always remember self-protection first, talk, block and evade, if that becomes impossible, train to strike! The martial arts strikes you will learn are used for self-preservation. In the street you have fewer or no choices. The physical confrontation should always be the last regrettable choice. The training hall (Dojo) is a learning, fine-tuning environment, where you strive to finely hone your skills.
There are three major types of martial arts schools: ASK! If they don't know which they are, turn and run! remember, "running your mouth" does not count for experience, nor does it count as conditioning work! It just reveals your weakness!
1. Sport: Usually these schools stress a point fighting/target striking, musical forms, ornate belts and decorated uniforms/gi. all are usually expensive. Point fighting, which basically means while sparring (practice fighting) contact is made with a punch or kick, you stop, re-start, and points are awarded. Usually a great deal of padding is worn at the time of sparring. Points, breaks or padding in a street fight or assault? Not likely!
2. Traditional: Traditional training halls, or DOJO, are very good for development of ones' discipline and mental focus. Also, these schools stress respect for fellow students and for all people one may encounter daily. These types of schools usually train for combat in a very rehearsed way, stand still, step and grab, or strike in a certain way at a specific angle/speed, and then the would-be attacker freezes and allows themself to be taken out with a strict pre-arranged technique. These schools do not encourage improvisation or adaptation to different attacks, so, if someone fights by the rules you are fine, but, what if their attack is erratic and unorthodox? At this point, does not improvising and adaptation become imperative? I BELIEVE SO!
3. Applied: Mixed Martial Arts is a way of training that allows the maximum effectiveness utilizing an incredible range of striking, blocking, evasion, submission and martial arts skills/disciplines. Also, one is trained in proper, safe usage of all striking/ fighting surfaces.
What does that mean?
Let me try to explain:
A. BOXING: A boxer uses evasion (fighting range) and attack, he/she uses two striking tools and one surface. Two hands/fists and standing position while heavy on a lead leg.
B. Kickboxing: More relaxed than traditional karate, these fighters utilize a minimal boxing knowledge combined with kicks from the larger, longer, stronger, legs. Now we have four striking tools hands/fists and legs/feet, but, still only one usable surface, the standing position, while now lighter on the lead leg to enable quicker kicking.
C. KARATE: Now, we add discipline, a respect for oneself and others, hand and foot striking and blocking, but, in most cases a limited adaptive, applied training, with some ground fight training. So, now we have two surfaces used, and four striking/blocking tools, plus discipline, we are getting there!
D. GRAPPLING/JUJITSU: This type of training will teach one to utilize a great many floor tactics, joint locks, choke holds, pressure/vital point striking, break-falls, rolls, while stressing blocking, trapping, evasion, and restraint/ immobilization tactics.
E. MIXED MARTIAL ARTS: Finally! This type of training stresses all of the afore-mentioned traits, plus, it utilizes three fighting surfaces, standing, clinching, and floor, as well as eight-sometimes nine striking tools hands/fists as one, feet, elbows, knees! This is why you will want to train with someone with a wide range, long-term knowledge and MARTIAL ARTS experience. Be wary of the, sudden outcropping of mixed martial arts teachers.
So, first look at your instructor, Does he/she practice what they preach? Is he/she in shape and fit? Do they smoke/drink in excess? Do they have frequent/past training injuries? Do they fight in the streets like animals? Do they injure their students? Do they injure themselves training? Do they use foul language? Are there moves/techniques they "don't train anymore?" Do they claim to have so-called "unstoppable techniques"? Consult with BRIAN GOSSELIN at EXTREME FITNESS, then Interview them, ask them a great many questions, if they act impatient or put off and above your inquiries, leave, as this pompousness will not disappear when you become a paying student - so, run! Remember there are around 300 different styles in karate, as well as many different styles in kung-fu, tai chi chuan, tae kwon do, kickboxing, boxing, muay Thai boxing, jujitsu, and countless others. MARTIAL ARTS training is and should be a continuous life-long learning-evolution/process, or journey, so, run from self-proclaimed "masters" as well!
One more thing, There is no one supreme style of martial arts,
only truly dedicated martial artists!
